When an accident happens

After an accident, it’s important to stay safe, stay calm, and collect the information your insurer will need. The steps below outline what to do at the scene to protect yourself and make the claims process easier later on.

  • Do not admit Liability even a casual apology might be misconstrued as an admission of liability and cause you to be ineligible for cover. Leave liability decisions to your insurer.

  • Make sure everyone is safe and move to a secure location if possible.

  • Call emergency services if anyone is injured or the scene is unsafe.

  • Exchange details with the other driver, including name, phone number, registration, and insurer.

  • Take clear photos of the vehicles, damage, road layout, and surroundings.

  • Note the time, location, weather conditions, and anything else that helps explain what happened.

  • Collect contact details for any witnesses.

  • If the accident involves injury, significant damage, or a hit‑and‑run, report it to the police and request an event number.

  • If safe to do so, move vehicles out of traffic to prevent further damage or risk.

  • If the vehicle is not drivable, arrange for it to be towed to a secure location.

To assess your motor vehicle claim, insurers only need the key details that explain what happened, who was involved, and the condition of your vehicle. The points below outline the core information required.

Policy & Driver Details

  • Your policy number and contact details

  • The driver’s licence details and relationship to the policyholder

  • Confirmation the driver had permission to use the vehicle

Vehicle Information

  • Make, model, year, and registration

  • Any modifications and whether the vehicle has a current WOF/COF

What Happened

  • Date, time, and exact location of the incident

  • Weather and road conditions

  • A clear description of how the accident occurred

  • Photos of the scene or damage (if available)

Other People Involved

  • Names and contact details of other drivers or property owners

Understanding Excess

An excess is the amount you contribute when you make a claim - it’s your share of the cost before your insurer covers the rest. Every policy has its own excess, and in some cases you may have more than one, such as a standard excess alongside a young‑driver or glass excess. Excesses exist to help keep premiums affordable, reduce small or minor claims, and ensure insurance is used for significant, unexpected events.

When you’ll need to pay it

 

You only pay an excess when a claim is accepted. The amount will be confirmed by your claims handler before repairs or replacements go ahead.

How to pay your excess

 

Depending on the type of claim, your excess may be collected in one of the following ways:

  • Directly to the repairer or supplier - Common for motor, home, and contents claims. The repairer will invoice you for the excess before or after the work is completed.

  • Directly to us - Some claims require payment to the insurer before settlement can be finalised.

  • Deducted from your payout - For cash settlements, the excess is simply subtracted from the amount you receive.

 

If someone else is at fault

 

If another party is clearly responsible and we can recover the costs from them, you may not need to pay an excess. Your claims handler will guide you through this.
